More Mystery SAL finishes

I continue to receive pictures of the Mystery SAL finishes and it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful and different each one is. The above finish is by Julia Z (no blog). Julia tells me she stitched 1*2 on 40ct natural Newcastle linen with Dinky Dyes number 33. The box is decor-mordant Folk Art 2805 cherry, decoupage and drawing. Such a lovely finish Julia.

The second beautiful finish is by Brenda of Time to Xstitch who also did a box finish. It is stitched on 40ct white linen with HDF Ocean Breeze. This is a birthday gift for Brenda's friend - some lucky friend eh?

Sew Nicole 1847

Sew Nicole 1847 is my first design for 2012. A French inspired tiny red sampler stitched 1*2 on 40ct Newcastle linen dyed with walnut ink and stitched with an HDF red silk thread OMG Red 1149. This small sampler consists of a delightful alphabet, two Fleur de Lis and a family of foxes playing in the foreground. It is hemstitched and mounted on Nacre Gander linen before framing.

Mystery SAL finishes

Patty of Hanging on by a Thread sent me this picture of her beautiful finish of the Mystery SAL. Using Simply Shaker Sampler Threads in Autumn Leaves #7073 on 40ct Pearled Barley linen, Patty finished as a box top edged with a gorgeous co-ordinating braid.

Elisa of Old Ragged Threads also sent me a picture of her finished SAL. Using Gentle Arts 'Rhubarb' on 32ct Murano Vanilla linen, Elisa stitched 1*1 to produce her wonderful finish. There are more pictures of this and Elisa's other beautiful stitching on her blog.

Elisa also stitched the freebie NOEL chart using recommended DMC threads on white 28ct Country French linen. She altered the snowflake to holly as the white didn't show on her chosen fabric. This is also stitched 1*1.

Mayté of MagicXstitch sent this collage of her lovely box finish of Sew a Mystery last month. It is stitched on cream 40ct Newcastle linen with a hand-dyed cotton floss called 'New Vision' from Carrie's Threads. The finishing fabric is 'Forget Me Not, My Love' by Robyn Pandolph for SSI Fabrics and the chenille trim was hand-dyed by Mayté with Hibicus and Raspberry organic tea. I have finished the alphabet section of Jane Rees and will post a picture shortly. I really wanted to start on the motifs section but I know I have to pre-stitch for a class in April. I overlocked (serged) the linen and basted the marking lines ready to start but then I got waylaid on the model for my new design. This is stitched on 40ct Newcastle linen (which I dyed with walnut ink) with HDF OMG Red 1149 - one of my favourite reds. It's small - approximately 4" x 4" square and will make an ideal box/tin topper although I have yet to decide whether to finish like this, to hem-stitch and frame it or to make a needle book. For some reason it's getting difficult to buy square frames locally, even the nearest Hobby Craft store have stopped stocking them. If my newest design is tempting you, please visit again in the very near future. Almost forgot ... it's called Sew Nicole 1847!

Jane Rees update

The above picture shows my progress on Jane Rees as at 31.12.11. Not a great picture as it's rather dark here today but you can see the progress. The fabric is 55ct antique white Gander linen and the thread is AVAS Soie Surfine 109.

As you can see from this picture I have a long way to go. I am aiming to finish the alphabet section as soon as I can and once that's done I will make a start on the pre-stitching of the Sherri Jones' Blue Ribbon Box for the class I have booked in London on April 21 *here* (scroll down).

Last night, as we were dog sitting, I spend a few hours surfing blogs and checking out Wish Lists so I could gift a chart or two. Unfortunately not one blog/wish list I visited had a iStitch Design! I wonder what that's telling me?

Gifts and a robin!

Much to my surprise, and my great delight, my daughter Nicola and her husband Ian gave me this wonderful sampler for Christmas. It is dated 1872 and has the initials EJK stitched at the bottom. They found this sampler in an antique shop in Rye, East Sussex a couple of months ago. Am I spoiled or what?

From my son Justin and his wife AnnMarie I received the above French stitching book by Isabelle Vautier and Catherine Arguela. There are some lovely charts inside and I look forward to stitching that pretty ABC, making some lace holders and the heart shaped needle book shown on the front cover.

The two pairs of scissors shown are two new pairs that were added to my collection and gifted by my friend Sylvie.

I will be showing more gifts later. A big thank you to all for my great gifts.

And here is the ornament that I stitched for Kirby - a delightful British robin. This was the 'stamp' from a mail art pattern called A Robin's Christmas by Lynne Nicoletti. It is worked on 40ct white Newcastle linen and I converted the threads from DMC to HDF silk threads. The holly berries and the robin's eye are teeny beads and I added tiny silver bells to the bottom of the ornament and made a hand-twisted cord for the hanger.

For 2012 I am aiming to stitch an ornament between each project so I do not have the last minute panic I had this year. I was still finishing this one on Christmas Eve!

iStitch in Williamsburg?

Two stitching friends of mine, Lynn and Sylvie, went to Williamsburg in early December and while they were there they spotted the above car registration and took this picture for me! Is this your car? I would love to hear from you if it is. Thanks to Lynn and Sylvie (also in the photo) for sharing the picture.

We enjoyed a lovely Christmas Day at daughter Nicola's house and Boxing Day at son Justin's house but the celebrations are not yet over as we are having a family trip to the Pantomime at The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury tomorrow. This year it's Cinderella and we are all looking forward to checking out the new Marlow Theatre after the renovations.

Amongst my gifts I received was an antique sampler, a French stitching book and other stitching related goodies (including two pairs of scissors for my collection) - more about these gifts in a future post.

I have also been working exclusively on Jane Rees over the holiday period so not too much of the alphabet section to go now before I start on the motifs. I will finish off the alphabets and then take a picture.

Four little reindeer ornaments and a tiny alphabet one for the children this year. One is missing - it is on my work table ready to be finished! These delightful little reindeers are freebies from Sharon's - It's Daffycat - blog and can be obtained by emailing Sharon.

Last night was my stitch group birthday (mine) and Christmas dinner and what fun we had! We exchanged Christmas gifts but I had the most lovely birthday gifts too. We always save our Christmas gifts under the actual day but I was allowed to open my birthday ones. I will show these off later but suffice it to say I was spoiled terribly so thank you ladies for my wonderful gifts and a most enjoyable evening.

I have been stitching on Jane Rees. I had forgotten how much I enjoy this one - Soie Surfine on 55ct Gander linen. I will take a WIP picture over the holiday.

Sew Gigi Edited

A new iStitch Design released today - Sew Gigi. A long sampler with an alphabet bordering a pretty band of flowers. This is stitched on 40ct Antique White Newcastle linen with an HDF silk thread called 'Gigi's Christmas' - hence the name of the design. Obviously there is no DMC equivalent of this thread but this design can be stitched in any variegated or solid colour thread. It is hem-stitched with DMC blanc.

Three Sew a Mystery finishes!

Valie finished her Sew a Mystery as this wonderful box top. Stitched on a 40ct linen with discontinued AVAS silk threads Valie found the perfect Liberty print for lining the inside of the box. Also found in her stash was the sweetest of dotted ribbon. Isn't this finish just gorgeous? There are more picture of this on Valie's blog *here* and while you are there check out her other beautiful stitching and finishing.

Kim of Scully's Cross Stitching chose to frame her version of Sew a Mystery. It is beautifully stitched with DMC variegated thread 88 on a white even weave fabric.

Maureen (no blog) also decided to frame her Mystery SAL. It is stitched on a piece of linen hand dyed by Vikki of Hand Dyed Fibers which has no specific name ... indeed a mystery piece! Her thread 'Paula Abalone' is also by Hand Dyed Fibers.

Three lovely finishes by three lovely ladies. Thank you for allowing me to showcase these here.

I have been stitching my Christmas ornaments and have 'finished' the two that have to be the mailed out. I hope to finish both stitching and 'final finishing' of the others shortly. I have also stitched the model of a new design and had hoped to be able to photograph it today but alas, it's yet another dark and gloomy day so I have had to postpone the photoshoot. This design will be released as soon as I can re-schedule the photoshoot. It's slightly different to the usual iStitch Design and I hope you like it.

C Mon Monde SAL finish

I managed to get a picture of my recent finish of the C Mon Monde SAL this morning. It's stitched on 48ct nacre Gander linen with my own choice of HDF silk threads. I am undecided on a 'final' finish but will probably just frame it.

I am now busy stitching up my Christmas ornaments. Every year I have good intentions of stitching these throughout the year and every year they get left until the last minute and with Christmas now being only four weeks away I am beginning to panic a little!

I have also been working on a new iStitch design and a little Christmas freebie too and both need to be stitched up.

Natalia of Koala's Needlework sent me these pictures of her beautiful finish of Sew a Mystery. Stitched 1*2 on 36ct Vintage Powder Lilac linen with Eggplant thread (both hand-dyed by Nina) Natalia mounted her lovely stitching on this gorgeous wood box.

She lined her box with a co-ordinating cotton fabric. Isn't this a wonderful finish? I know that Natalia stitched the SAL twice so I am looking forward to seeing her second finish. Thank you Natalia for allowing me to post here.

Part 3 C Mon Monde SAL

I finished stitching up Part 3 of the C Mon Monde SAL. Although the chart doesn't call for it, I will be adding berries to the lower vines as I think it looks 'unfinished' without them. Apologies for the poor picture - it's dark and gloomy here again.

Christmas ornaments are the next on the list - once again I have left them until late in the year especially those that have to travel!

Mystery final finishes

Some 'final' finishes of the Mystery SAL are now arriving. First up is Barbara of To Stitch or Not to Stitch. Barbara chose to stitch her mystery on a 30ct hand-dyed linen with a dark blue Mandarin floss and finished into a sewing case using a pretty green cotton for the lining and pocket with a silk ribbon closure to match the blue stitching. Inside is blue wool felt for her needles and mother of pearl holders for her threads. They say that 'blue and green should never be seen' but I think that Barbara has proved that this saying is definitely not so. Congratulation Barbara on such a wonderful finish.

Next up is Jo of Serendipitous Stitching. This version is stitched on 36ct white even weave linen with a hand-dyed silk floss from De Havilland threads. Jo found the perfect box to mount her beautiful stitching - congratulations Jo!

Last, but certainly not the least, is June (no blog). June stitched on a 40ct linen using a variegated thread from her stash and finished on the same style Hobby Lobby card box that I used for mine except that she painted hers white and used ric-rac edging - how pretty - congratulations June!

Part 2 C Mon Monde SAL

I was a little behind with Part 2 of the C Mon Monde SAL as Part 3 was due out on Monday but my weekend was extremely busy with the Mystery SAL and on Monday we went to the cinema to see In Time starring Justin Timberlake. However I managed to catch up yesterday and duly sent my picture off; back came an acknowledge but no Part 3! It turns out that Virginie was away at a show and no Part 3s have been despatched and hopefully they will be sent out either today or tomorrow. I hope we get a little longer to produce Part 3 as I am working tomorrow and Friday. Instead of putting four cross stitches for the red and white berries I used Rhodes stitches and very pretty they look too. Click on the picture for a closeup view.

It's another dark and gloomy day here in south east England - it's going to be a very long Winter.

The son of our friends in Sarasota, Fl is getting married next week so I stitched a wedding sampler. I was hoping to deliver this during our Autumn trip but, as the trip was postponed, I had to take a chance with the Post Office. I have heard that the gift has arrived in Sarasota; I am hoping that the glass remains intact! The other part of the wedding gift was also 'breakable'; I hope this is also in one piece. I wrapped both the sampler and the gift in tons of bubble wrap which I placed in a box surround by even more bubble wrap. The box was marked with large red FRAGILE stickers. Isn't the date a great day to get married - no wedding anniversary will ever be forgotten!

Part 8 of the Mystery SAL has been released today and the above picture shows the finished box top. The chart comes with the initial area left blank and a Sajou alphabet chart to enable insertion of any initial you choose. Please note there is no W in the alphabet but turn the alphabet chart upside down and the M becomes a W! If you have not received the chart and you think you should have, please email me. My email address on my profile. Once I receive a picture of the finished design, I will immediately send out the bonus pin pillow chart to you - no waiting involved.

A new iStitch Design released today - Sew Frost! A snowy alphabet, two tiny robins and a heart, a snow laden house with a border of holly leaves and berries and snow-capped pine trees. It is stitched on 38ct blue Gander linen with AVAS silk threads in Blanc Optique, 2925, 4115 and Needlepoint Inc 407. DMC equivalents are given on the chart.

My dear friend Caroline stitched Sew Bands and then did her own thing with the finishing! She stitched her own Eiffel Tower with more bands and then finished both pieces as a case for her Limited Edition Eiffel Tower scissors. It is stitched with Gloriana's Cranberry silk thread on 40ct natural linen with the Eiffel Tower stitched over one in tent stitch. Caroline then found the perfect fabric for the lining. The whole thing is absolutely beautiful and a big thank you to Caroline for allowing me to post this here.

I stitched up Part 1 of the C Mon Monde SAL in time to receive Part 2 which I started last night. There is a fair amount of stitching to do in one week and I think it might have been easier, for me anyway, if the parts came every two weeks but I will persevere and hopefully be able to keep up.

I have been receiving in pictures of Part 7 of my own Mystery SAL and there are more to view below. There is only one more part of the main design due for release on November 5 although there is a bonus pin pillow for those that finish.

Too big? So young?

After seeing the lovely hoop box that Vonna showed on her blog *here*, I was quite enamoured by the idea and thought I would do one too. I already had the pattern - BBD Summer House - and a piece of R&R 30ct cappachino linen in my stash so I thought I would make a start. I also had the same colour thread that Donna had used but, it is a little too 'browny' for my taste so I decided to go with DMC 115. I stitched the design 2*2 but oh dear it's much too large for my liking so I am going to restitch it 1*2 on 40ct raw Newcastle linen with a yet unchosen thread and finish it on 5" hoops instead of 6". I may even chose a different design or do my own thing! Vonna posts an excellent finishing tutorial for this on her blog and only asks that your give her credit for her idea. Thank you Vonna for sharing your wonderful idea.

I won another pair of scissors on ebay.fr for the princely sum of 6 euros plus postage and packing of 1,50 euros - such a bargain! As you can see these are marked 'France' on one side and P R Nogent on the other. I wonder if these are made by Monsieur Roulot? They are very fine and delicate and a wonderful addition to my collection.

After a terrific thunderstorm a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. My picture does not show how pretty the colours were. A few year ago I drove through a rainbow - I didn't find a pot of gold but it was quite a magical experience!

The Mystery SAL box is now 'finished' and I have prepared a finishing tutorial which I will post once the SAL is over. For those of you enquiring about the release of the chart, it will be available as soon as the SAL is finished which won't be too long now. There is a new Christmas/Winter chart due for release shortly - it was to be Sew Hopeful but, after much deliberation and chart amendments, I changed my mind and it's now called Sew Frost - imagine a Winter scene with holly, snowflakes and snow laden trees!

I am also working on a wedding sampler for the son of dear friends in Sarasota who is getting married on 11.11.11. I asked about the wedding 'colour theme' and his dad said 'bright primary colours' - I hope he wasn't pulling my leg but anyway I stitched red on white and, hopefully, the happy couple will be pleased with it.

I signed up for another SAL, a partnership between The Threadbasket and C Mon Monde which comes in four weekly parts. I must admit I misread and thought that it was every four weeks! This morning I received a package from Simone of Atelier Soed Idee with the giveaway I won on her blog. I had a choice of colour and, as you can see, I chose red - no surprise here then! Simone has the most wonderful designs and kits for sale on her website *here* and many of her designs can be seen on her blog *here*. Simone has been designing since early 2011 and her designs are both delightful and reasonably priced. Thank you Simone for my wonderful gift.

I have also been RAKd by the lovely Elisa of Old Ragged Threads who sent me a skein of GAST thread in Cherry Wine - such a pretty shade of red. Thank you Elisa - it's much appreciated.

I though you might like to see this 'sky' picture from the back of our house late yesterday afternoon. I love to look at clouds and these were quite amazing.

A day out!

Ken and I took a trip out yesterday to Rye in East Sussex. This is a very pretty little town just over the Kent-Sussex border.

We parked the car and walked up a steep lane and arrived at the Landgate monument. This is the only one remaining of four gateways built in 1329. Click on the picture for further information.

The houses either side of the steep and tiny streets are quite delightful. Look how narrow the house with the green door is in the top left hand picture!

When I saw the above shop I thought of Edgar - blogland's very own Black Sheep!

We took the coast road home and stopped for a breath of fresh air at Camber Sands. I have no idea why it's called Cambers Sands as the beach was pebbles not sand. It was very windy and I was nearly blown off my feet!

When we arrived home we discovered that Tommy had decided it was time to bed down for the long Winter months so into his box and then into the garden shed. He will sleep now until mid-March 2012.

Not much news on the stitching front. I am awaiting on some blue Gander linen to arrived from France to stitch the Sew Hopeful model. I have stitched but not finished one ornament for Christmas so one down and 7 to go! The Mystery SAL is going well and I have received in 63 pictures of Part 6 so nearly half of the 125 participants are keeping up to date! Part 7 will be released this coming weekend with Part 8 to follow two weeks thereafter.

She tells me that she used some old 'dirty linen' from her stash with 'Calico Kitty' thread which she thinks is a Sampler Thread. Whatever the fabric and thread it's a very pretty finish! Picture heavy post

I have now finished stitching my SAL Giumauve et Violette. I'm not sure what I will put in the space above the garland in the centre - the designer suggested a charm and I think I have a Fleur de Lys charm somewhere in my stash which might suffice. I'm not sure of a 'final' finish!

Last week we took a trip to Canterbury and I took a few snaps. These show a marked difference between the old and new buildings in the city centre. The 'older building' is, of course, Canterbury Cathedral.

We also popped into a shop for a bottle of water and noticed this lovely display of 'old fashioned' sweets (candies) - check out those sugar mice - how I loved these as a child. I resisted buying any as I am not sure I am up for a pure sugar hit!

We then drove to Westwood Cross in Broadstairs as I wanted to go to Hobby Craft and after a quick lunch at Frankie and Bennys we decided to go see the new Jason Statham movie - Killer Elite. As you can see from the above picture DH arranged a private showing! Not really but we did get the cinema to ourselves and the movie was great.

On the way home we stopped so I could get a picture of the Viking Ship at Pegwell Bay. This ship has been there for as long as I can remember. Isn't it wonderful?

This year there seems to be a vast amount of spiders webs in my garden with the most enormous spiders. I keep well away and used the zoom on my camera to get a couple of pictures!

I'm sorry for the mish-mash post today but I have been holding these pictures on my desktop and have at last found time to post. All the pictures are clickable for closeup views.

At last I was able to take time out to frame Tante Minna! The beech frame I stained and distressed to make it more suitable for an old sampler. I used HDF silk thread in OMG Red 1149 on walnut ink dyed 48ct Gander linen and the finished sampler measures 5" x 5"

I wish to thank Sylvia *here* for very kindly sharing her Aunt Minna's pretty little red sampler. I really enjoyed stitching this one and I'm now deciding which little red to stitch next.

Next up to 'finish' will be my ornament in memory of Chelsea and then to finally finish my Mystery SAL box.

I have fallen behind in the Guimauve et Violette SAL but hope to catch up soon. I think the last part is to be released this coming weekend.

I have new scissors - not one new pair but two! The top scissors are the latest Gingher Alicia in my favourite colour. These are only available at Joann stores in the US and Brenda of Time 2 Xstitch very kindly offered to get me some and mail them to England. They are now sitting in my 'Gingher' glass frog. The second pair of scissors are French which Paule (no blog) very kindly offered to get for me. These are now sitting in my 'French' glass frog. Stitchers really are the best. A huge thank you to both Brenda and Paule!

As you know I've been extremely busy with the Mystery SAL and I must admit that I did not realise how much work this would be. However, it's great fun and it good to see the fabrics and threads chosen by each participant and how different each one looks. For those of you who feel you have missed out on signing up for the SAL, I will be releasing the chart at the end of the SAL at a nominal cost.

My personal stitching time has been limited but I did manage to finish Tante Minna and will be framing her once I have stained and distressed the frame that I picked up at Hobby Craft last week. Sew Halloween is nearly stitched and as soon as this is done and I have 'finished' it it will be released for sale. Jane Rees has had a few stitches put into her and I have started a new page. Pictures of all WIPs will follow in due course.

It's raining and very gloomy here today. I really hope that there are few more days of sunshine left before Autumn sets in. Our Florida vacation has been postponed due to work commitments and I doubt we will be able to get away until May 2012.

Part 3 of the Mystery SAL is released today and has been sent to all participants who have sent in their pictures of Part 2. As you will see Part 3 is tiny and can be stitched in a very short time. If I receive enough pictures within a week, I will release Part 4 next weekend as opposed to waiting until September 24.

We have lost 3 members owing to illness but these places have already been filled from the waiting list. I am still outstanding 7 Part 1 pictures and 32 Part 2 pictures! Two people are stitching this twice - congratulations to you both.

I am preparing a finishing tutorial for the box finish which will be sent with the bonus chart and which will also be posted here.

It's Sew Spooky in Australia!

Natalia of Koala's Needlework Cross Stitch and Embroidery sent me this lovely picture of her finish of Sew Spooky. It's stitched on a 32ct linen hand-dyed by Nina using various threads and the tiny charm was purchased at a craft show in Sydney. There are more pictures of this beautifully stitched and finished pin keep over on Natalia's blog and while you are there, take time to look at Natalia's other delightful stitching and finishing. You will see she is stitching the Mystery SAL in two different versions and it's very difficult to say which one I like best as both are very lovely! I have finished stitching Tante Minna and need to get this one framed for my 'red wall'. I have also been working on Jane Rees. Yesterday I decided to line my box for the Mystery SAL piece and I'm very pleased with the result and can't wait to show it off! The silk ribbons I ordered from HDF for Chelsea's ornament arrived this morning so I will be finishing this sometime soon. I designed this ornament in memory of Chelsea and which reflects Chelsea's love of the ocean.

Boxes for the Mystery SAL Edited

I have a limited supply of the boxes for the Mystery SAL. You can see the inside of these boxes *here* showing the box after I stained and distressed it but you could paint it or even wax it to keep its original colour. You must be stitching on 40ct linen for the design to fit the top of the box. The stitching will be almost to the edges of the top allowing a tiny border for the chenille trim to be affixed. The bonus pin pillow will fit exactly into one of the inside sections.

As I said earlier, I have a very limited supply of these boxes and they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Sew Blue Bear and a day out!

Meet Sew Blue Bear! My talented friend Valie decided to work her magic on Sew Bands and removed a few bands/motifs and replaced them with a delightful ceramic bear and some wording and she also stitched it in blue - my favourite colour. I received this in the post yesterday and was quite overcome with it's beauty and originality. My French friend knows me so well - my colour preferences and my collection of bears! On Thursday my son Justin and his family invited me on a trip to France. We caught an early ferry at Dover and once there we drove to Le Touquet, a delightful little seaside town on the northern coast. For once the weather did us proud and we were able to go onto the beach and after this we went into the town which is crammed with tiny shops and restaurants where we ate fresh mussels cooked in a garlic sauce - mmmnn - delicious. The kids, not being as adventurous as the adults, opted for pizza! We had a great day marred only by the slowness of Passport Control on our return journey which caused us to miss the return boat so we had to wait over an hour for the next one. We will definitely have to do this again guys - I had a fabulous time and thank you for the invite.

I have been stitching and Tante Minna will be finished over the weekend. I have chosen a frame which I will stain and distress. I also need to 'finish' my Mystery SAL box so these projects are definitely next on my list and after this I feel the need to put some stitches in poor, neglected Jane Rees.

Claudia had the great idea of having this framed with a mount so that the stitching looks as though it's 'floating' in the frame and it certainly looks that way. I am back to stitching Tante Minna and I am 2/3rds of the way done and hope to have a finish to show very soon. I have decided to put this in a stained and distress frame and to hang it on my soon to be 'red wall'; I have a few little reds ready for framing and hanging.

It's dark and gloomy and already I feel my SAD beginning to make an appearance. SAD in August? This is far too early in the year - I feel it's going to be a very long Winter!

As can be seen from the picture slideshows, the Mystery SAL is being stitched worldwide. There are some really beautiful versions with great colour choices of both fabrics and threads. Part 2 is due to be released on Saturday but, if I have the time, I will release it on Friday so those that are stitching this will be able to devote the weekend to stitching. However, I am still outstanding 34 pictures so note if you have not sent in your picture, please make sure you do so as 'no picture' = 'no Part 2 chart'! Please remember that you only have to stitch the corner motif; the full border is not obligatory but feel free to stitch it if you want. I would prefer pictures without any writing on them please as I will add your names to them before they appear on the slideshows.

If anyone has signed up and is no longer interested in participating or is unable to stitch the Mystery design for any reason, please let me know as soon as possible. There is an ever-growing waiting list for this SAL and it's only fair to let someone else have your place if you are not going to commit.

SAL Guimauve et violette update

I finished stitching Part 5 of the French SAL Guimauve et Violette. I am not enjoying this as much as I did when I started it but I think this is down to the fact that she is only supplying small colour charts which print up rather blurry and therefore makes my eyes ache trying to follow the chart!

Pam sent me a picture of her finish of Sew Many Keys. She stitched this 1*1 on 40ct HDF Dark Brown Bunny linen with HDF silk thread Kindling and you can tell by the picture just how tiny this is! I am looking forward to seeing how Pam decides to 'finish' this one. Thank you Pam for allowing me to showcase your lovely stitching here.

I have stitched up Part 6 of the Mystery SAL but of course I cannot show this yet! I received a few questions about my staining and distressing of the Hobby Lobby card box. I used a product called Coloron Wood Dye in Jacobean Dark Oak which I got at the local DIY store (Homebase or B&Q). It's a liquid in a can which you rub on with a cloth although I did use a fine tip brush to get around the fastenings and into the corners. I left it overnight and then I distressed it slightly with a piece of fine sandpaper. Next step is to line it with the blue silk.

We are off to the cinema this afternoon to see The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It's a long time since we went to the cinema - I like to go, the other half does not but he has agreed to come along with me today.

Mystery SAL - First 25 pictures!

Scissors and the Mystery SAL

Last week I received yet another pair of scissors that I won on French ebay. They are actually a lot nicer than the picture shows them to be. The seller wrapped them in two old picture postcards which I thought was a nice idea. These postcards have now gone in my 'postcard box'.

This is the Hobby Lobby card box which I will be using to mount my Mystery SAL piece once it's finished. It comes unfinished and I was undecided whether to just wax it or stain and distress it. As you can see I went with the latter option. I wasn't too fussy about the top of the box as, of course, this will no longer be seen once I mount the stitched piece.

This shows the inside of the box and, as you can see, the glue remains uncoloured but this will be hidden once the lining of French Navy silk goes in.

I have a few of these boxes being sent over from a friend in the US and once they arrive I will be able to offer some to readers in the UK and Europe so if you are stitching the Mystery SAL (on 40ct linen) and would like to 'finish' it as a box top, please keep visiting here as numbers of these boxes for sale are limited. Please do not email me as yet as I do no not have them in stock. Of course if you live in the US these boxes are widely available at Hobby Lobby. The bonus chart, which will be sent to you on completion of the SAL, will be a pincushion to fit in one of the sections inside the box.

And now to the Mystery SAL. I continue to be amazed at the response to the SAL and I have already received 19 pictures of finishes of Part 1. The different threads chosen are gorgeous and a couple of choices have already caused me to 'Add to Cart' on different websites! Well done to all.

I sent the chart out a few hours earlier than I intended (some of you just could not wait - you know who you are) so, as it was already Saturday in Australia, I capitulated and out they went. By late evening here I had received two pictures - one from Brenda in the US and the other from Paule in France! I look forward to receiving more pictures. I am preparing a slideshow and will be posting this shortly.

I am sorry that some of you have missed out on this SAL but I had to keep the numbers manageable. By request I have opened a waiting list which appears to be growing daily.

Gifts, Sew French Blue and the Mystery SAL *EDITED**CLOSED*

I received not one, but two, lovely gifts from dear Angela. Firstly, this absolutely beautiful monogram ornament, stitched over 1 with two shades of red floss which matches perfectly both the red velvet backing and the ribbon hanger.

Secondly, one of Angela's pin books also in red. The above is the front and inside ...

... a delightful red felting with a pretty bow and red pins. Now you too can be the owner of one or more of these little pin books. There are many different ones available and more pictures are shown on Margaret's blog *here* scroll down, but not too quickly as Margaret has some lovely stitching on show, and you will see the Eiffel Tower, Keep Calm and Carry On and even a mermaid or two! Each pin book is printed onto quality card stock which is then gently distressed for an aged look look and measures approximately 3" x 1½". Each one has a matching wool felt interior and three pearl headed pins. These will make ideal gifts for stitching friends although I think you will find these very difficult to give away! If you are interested , email me (my email address can be found on my profile) and I will put you in touch with Angela who does not have a blog but if you click on *here* it will take you to her 'picture trail' and you can see her amazing work. Thank you Angela for these very thoughtful gifts.

Last, but by no means least, is Brenda's lovely version of Sew French Blue which she stitched as a birthday gift for a friend. It is stitched on 32ct white Belfast linen with HDF Ocean Breeze. Brenda tells me that she got the frame from *here* - you let them know the dimensions and back comes the perfect frame. Thank you Brenda for allowing me to showcase your beautiful stitching.

Here is Part 4 of the French SAL Guimauve et Violette. I am glad I chose a larger count linen to stitch this on (38ct nacre Gander) - see post of August 3!

I am continuing to be amazed at the reaction to my own Mystery SAL. I have been inundated with sign-ups and I might have to limit the numbers shortly otherwise I will be spending the whole of next weekend (and subsequent weekends) sending out charts! So ... if you want to join in apply NOW otherwise you could miss out. See previous post for details and further details can be sent on request.

My kit for the Sherri Jones' Blue Ribbon Sewing Box class arrived this morning. The class is not until April 2012 so I have plenty of time for the pre-stitching. I am really looking forward to this class and I can't wait to see the beautiful wood boxes.

The sun has decided to make an appearance today so I'm hoping it will stay nice so I can spend some time in the garden later. I have been reading the Stieg Larsson Triology on my Kindle. I loved books 1 and 2 but not too sure about The Girl Who Kicked Hornets' Next - it seems to 'ramble' a bit. How sad that such a talented author did not live to see his work become such a great success. Rumour has it there is a fourth book but arguments between his family and partner are preventing it being published, if indeed it exists!

iStitch Mystery SAL

I am amazed at the amount of people who have shown interest in joining my Mystery SAL - thank you!

The eight parts are charted and I have stitched Part 1 which needs to be photographed. I have used HDF Rubbed Navy 2219/2161/2307 on 40ct antique white Newcastle linen. The thread is the same shade of some French Navy silk fabric that I have in my stash and which I want to use for finishing. If you stitch this on 40ct linen if will be a perfect (I hope) fit for Hobby Lobby's little wooden box *here*. Of course you can stitch this in whatever colour and on whatever fabric you like!

If you wish to sign up now please email me (my email address is on my profile) and let me know your first name and surname, your email address and your blog url if you have one. You do not need a blog to participate. Please note I will only refer to your first name and the first letter of your surname on my blog. Another Brown Bunny sighting!

I received an email from Dora (no blog) showing her beautiful version of Sew a Brown Bunny. It is stitched on 40ct natural linen, one over two, with the recommended DMC thread with the addition of one colour. She also made the little strawberry fob out of muslin and wool to match the design - how wonderful is that? Thank you Dora for allowing me to share this here.

I have finished stitching Part 4 of the French SAL Guimauve et Violette but I need to take a picture. The moderator/designer seems only to be putting up the colour charts now which print up rather blurry and make it difficult to count. I hope she reverts to a black-n-white option before I completely ruin my eyesight! I am contemplating an iStitch SAL; I wonder if anyone would be interested?

Weekend stitching!

I put a few more stitches into Tante Minna over the weekend. I am really enjoying stitching this one - so small and delicate. I will finish off the left-hand border before I put in the next alphabet. For those of you who may have missed my previous posts on Tante Minna, this is a free pattern given by Sylvia *here*. Her blog is in German although there is a google link translator at the top of the sidebar and I suggest you use this as the story of 'Tante Minna' is worth reading. There is also a picture of this wonderful lady.

Last weekend we went out for dinner at our favourite restaurant, the Sandwich Arms in ... where else ... Sandwich! The British Open was held in Sandwich a couple of weeks back and the above pictures show just how pretty this small town is. Sandwich is one of the Cinque Ports which are a historic series of coastal towns in Kent and Sussex originally formed for military and trade purposes but is now entirely ceremonial. It lies at the eastern end of the English Channel, where the crossing to the continent is narrowest. The name means 'five ports' which are: Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich.

Weekend stitching!

I put a few more stitches in Tante Minna. I am really enjoying stitching this one! The picture shows the width of this sampler and the scissors give you some perspective of exactly how tiny it is. The scissors are 'Roo' scissors which were given to me for Christmas last year by a dear friend. Aren't they gorgeous?

I downloaded Part 3 of the French SAL, Guimauve et violette and immediately stitched it up. This is such a pretty little piece and quite different from my usual colour palette.

Last week we went into Canterbury and decided to come home via the 'pretty route'. We came through the small village of Fordwich so I took some pictures of the charming buildings in the village. The above picture above shows the Fordwich Arms, a very popular pub/restaurant. Just check out that unusual chimney. It was a shame that we had already eaten lunch as I hear they do a really good meal here. Maybe we can make a return visit?

The is the Town Hall which is immediately across the road from the Fordwich Arms. Isn't that an amazing building? Click on the picture to enlarge it so you can read what the plaque says.

Nearby is this quaint little house called 'Give Ale Cottage' - quite apt I thought for being next door to a pub!

The other property shown at the top of this picture is just around the corner from the others. I do love these old buildings and I'm so glad I had my camera with me so I could share them. Again this picture is clickable for a closeup view.

Sew Perfectly Red

I was going to wait until the weekend to release Sew Perfectly Red but I have other plans for the weekend so here it is a few days early! A flower border to the left, an usual alphabet and patterns to the right, it is stitched on 40ct raw Newcastle linen with HDF silk thread in Perfect Red 6209. The trim I used can be purchased from Violarium *here* (it's the second one down on the page) and is an exact match to both the raw linen and the thread. Check out the other trims too, they are really lovely.

Sew Strawberry Fields

New iStitch Design released today - Sew Strawberry Fields. Two birds feast on a delicious strawberry, a pretty alphabet and even more strawberries. It is stitched on 40ct white Newcastle linen with HDF silk threads in PB Olive, Perfect Red 6209 and BeGrimed. DMC equivalents are given on the chart.

More scissors and an award!

These scissors are the latest addition to my scissors collection. This lovely pair of ornate scissors are from Toledo in Spain and were made by the Tres Claveles company. They date back to the 1970s and are 3½" long with impressed leaves and fleur de lis on the handles and a blackened damascene pattern on the blade. They have already taken up residence in one of my glass frogs!

A few weeks ago our Stitch-n-Bitch group met up for an afternoon/evening firstly so that June could teach us how to make quilted pouches and here is my effort. I raided my fabric stash and you may even have contributed to this pouch as a couple of these fabrics were gifts from fellow stitchers/bloggers! The pouch is lined with the plain pink fabric. June makes the most fabulous pouches - I have a gorgeous one in black and white in my laptop bag which holds the charger and a mouse which she gave me a part of a birthday gift. I hope to make a few more of these in the future and, hopefully, will get more prolific with practice. The second reason for our meeting was to celebrate June's birthday - we had a lovely afternoon and evening with a Chinese takeout.

Lastly but by no means the least, Elisa of Old Ragged Threads has very kindly awarded me the Stylish Blogger Award. What an honour - thank you Elisa!

Sew Scattered and Sew Forth

You wait for one bus and two come along at the same time and it seems that it's the same with iStitch Designs. Two releases for July:

Firstly, Sew Scattered - delicate flower motifs scattered with an alphabet. It is stitched on 40ct white Newcastle linen with HDF silk threads in Magpie Tears 2343, Magpie Tears 2349 and Kail 3363. DMC equivalents are given on the chart.

Secondly, Sew Forth - an alphabet border surrounds a flower motif. Once again this is stitched on 40ct white Newcastle linen with HDF silk threads in Brass Tacks 3451, PennyWort 3445, Steelies 2451 and Quince 1405. As before DMC equivalents are given on the chart.

SAL Guimauve et violette

As mentioned in my previous post, I joined the French *SAL Violette et guimauve and I have now stitched Parts 1 and 2. I chose 38ct nacre Gander linen and three colours from the HDF palette WinterBerry 1433, WinterBerry 1421 and Mauve 1439. This was a quick and easy stitch and I enjoyed it immensely. Part 3 is due out on July 16 (my late mother's birthday). If you want to join this SAL go *here* where you will find details (in French). * I have just realised that I have the name of this SAL the wrong way round - it's SAL Guimauve et violette - opps!

A few weeks ago my Stitch-n-Bitch group decided they would like to make beaded scissors fobs so I showed them how to use their little Eiffel Towers and a selection of beads to make the above fob. Didn't they all make a good job?

I have decided to have a 'finishing morning' for Sew Forth and Sew Scattered so if I can finish these today and the light enables me to take some pictures, I will release both charts in the next day or so.

A new start

I know I should not really be having a new start but I could not resist this one! This is a free chart called 'Tante Minna' and can be found on Sylvia's blog *here*. I am stitching on 48ct walnut ink dyed Gander linen with HDF OMG Red 1149. The needle is a 28 Bohin which shows exactly how tiny this will be! For those who love scissors these are Dovo's Victorian Treasures.

Red roses are one of my favourite flowers. This bouquet is displayed in a posy vase that has a flower frog inside. Yes - I am using a flower frog for it's intended purpose!

I still need to 'finish' Sew Forth and Sew Scattered before photographing them and releasing the charts but the weather is much too nice to stay indoors. Also I actually went to work for two days last week to cover for someone who is sick. It seemed strange to sit in my old office; it seems the lady who sits in there now is rather untidy and I had to clear up the desk before I could start as I really cannot work in a mess. I also had to turn my mind back to using a pc as I think my brain is in 'mac mode' but I soon caught on. I wondered whether to save my pennies but I decided to treat myself to a Kindle instead. I know I can read books on my iPad but, as you know, I like to read outside and the sun reflects badly on the iPad screen. I understand that the Kindle screen is much more easy to read in sunlight.

I have join the French SAL Guimauve et Violette *here*. Two parts have been released so I have to catch up but the parts are quite small so, hopefully, it won't be too much of a problem. I have decided on 38ct nacre Gander linen but have yet to choose my threads.

A friendship page

This is the friendship page I stitched for Amy. As you know I usually stitch miniature but this was stitched on Lakeside linen Vintage Buttercream 32ct with the recommended DMC threads. The pattern is an OOP Prairie Schooler 'Friends & More Friends' . It seemed strange to stitch on 32ct after using such high count linens, and to use DMC threads instead of silks but I enjoyed stitching it and I hope that Amy will be pleased to receive a page for her Friendship Book.

My strawberry pot has been producing a fair amount of strawberries, probably down to having new plants this year. And not only ordinary strawberries, there has been a few strange shapes like this little foot and even Siamese twins! Both were delicious!

The strawberries gave me inspiration for a new design - Sew Strawberry Fields. The chart is done and I need to stitch a model. Sew Forth and Sew Scattered are both charted and stitched but I need to 'finish' the models so I think a finishing afternoon is in order but not today - we are having a mini heatwave and it's much too warm to stay inside. So ... I am off to the garden with my latest book.

Sew Peacock box

Today, I received an email from Cynthia of Redford, MI (no blog) with pictures of her version of Sew Peacock. It is stitched with DMC threads on 28ct white Monaco fabric. Inside the box is a 'sewing kit' - the lid houses a bluish-green hoop. The box itself is divided into 4 compartments - in the top left section are scissors with a beaded and tassel fob. Top right contains a needlebook stitched from part of the design. Main left is a pouch for floss bags and room for Cynthia's reading glasses. Main right is a ruler floss ring tag, a small pincushion and a counting pin pinkeep - all stitched from part of the main design. Wow what a beautiful box of goodies - thank you Cynthia for sharing your wonderful finish!

Sew Forth is almost ready for release. I had to re-stitch the model as I noticed that I had omitted the letter F from the alphabet border! Oh dear I almost used a word beginning with a letter F when I realised what I had done but all is fine; it has been re-charted to include the F and I hope to finish stitching the model over the weekend.

Kirby is back home for the Summer. I cannot believe that she has completed two years of her three year course at University - where does the time go to? She is hoping to design some charts during her Summer break and these will be available from her own site at some time in the near future. Do you remember her Sew Parisian *here* that she designed for part of her course?

Scissors, more scissors and a sneak peek!

These beautiful scissors are my latest finds from ebay. The top pair are marked 'Nogent' whilst the other pair have the intials GC on them - see the picture below for a closeup or better still click on the pictures for a really closeup view! I paid 5 euros for each pair - such a bargain.

I wonder who 'GC' was and how it came about that her/his scissors ended up on on ebay? Or were they a gift from G to C? I will never know but I do know that these scissors are a welcome addition to my collection and I will always treasure them.

Also in today's post I received a box containing these beautiful Sajou cart scissors from a dear friend in Florida - she knows who she is - thank you so much. These scissors have been on my wish list since Sajou released them but I never imagined that I would ever actually own a pair! I am so blessed to have such a generous friend.

And now a little tease. This is a sneak peek on my latest iStitch design. It is stitched on white (despite looking rather grey in the picture) 40ct Newcastle linen with four delicate shades of HDF silk threads. For want of a better name, I have called this one Sew Four and it will be available shortly.

We are having such awful weather here these past few days. I really hope that it brightens up over the weekend as the whole family are going to the Real Deal Scooter Club's 'White Cliffs Weekender' and it will be such a shame if it rains.
