Kirby and I went to the Aiguilles en fête needlework fair in Paris earlier this month. Unfortunately I didn't take too many pictures at the show although here is one of M Roulot of the wonderful Nogent scissors! I  was a little disappointed with the show this year as it was more for fabrics and quilting than stitching but we had a fun time and I will post some sightseeing pictures later but in the meantime here is one showing that we left a lock on the famous Bridge of Locks near the Notre Dame!

Paris - Part 2

Valie and I exchanged gifts on my recent trip to Paris. Antique spools with thread and lace, SEW pins - ideal for my 'Sew' patterns, a ceramic heart for Valentine's Day in my favourite shade of blue and Loccitane Hand Cream to sooth my Winter stricken hands.  I also received a beautifully made bag just perfect for carrying my stitching to my group meetings. There are more pictures of this gorgeous work on Valie's blog *here*. Thank you dear friend for spoiling me!

Photo with the permission of Valie

I also took gifts to Valie - a Quaker Pinwheel embroidered with her initial and a teensy teddy bear. The pinwheel is stitched on 40ct raw Newcastle linen with HDF silk threads in White and Examplar Lark's Tongue.

Amongst other gifts, I gave her a Cathedral Window pincushion in some of her favourite colours. This is my first attempt at this type of sewing and although it's not perfect I know she appreciates that I was out of my comfort zone making this. Will there be a second attempt? As yet I have no idea but never say never!

Whilst I was away it was Angela's birthday so she also received a Quaker Pinwheel with her initial. This is also stitched on 40ct raw Newcastle linen with HDF silk thread in white and Hibiscus. Pink is Angela's favourite colour so I knew I would be safe in choosing this vibrant shade of pink.

A closeup of Angela's Pinwheel - the back is a plain silk fabric. I hope to release the whole alphabet (plus an online finishing tutorial) on iStitch Designs so look out for Sew a Quaker Pinwheel in the near future.

I promised more pictures of my Parisian trip so rather than post separate pictures I made a collage. We visited the fabric stores at Montmartre and then climbed the many steps to the Sacre Coeur. The walk down was far easier than the climb up! It was a beautiful sunny day although a little cold - poor Kirby (in the centre picture) looks absolutely frozen despite her gorgeous faux fur jacket!  On the journey to Valie's home we drove through the streets of Paris glimpsing the Eiffel Tower and the Moulin Rouge and despite there being no 'lanes' we arrived safely at our destination where we had a most enjoyable meal at a local steak restaurant and I ate snails for the first time. Kirby turned up her nose and skipped the starters LOL

It was again a very successful trip but was over far too quickly. It was good to meet with Valie and spend time with her and her delightful family. As before I was quite impressed with the Eurostar service - the trains were on time and the carriages were clean. We arrive back at Ashford International where Kirby's boyfriend was waiting for her with a large bunch of red roses. Ken was also waiting for me but ... no roses. Who says romance is dead?

Before I finish for today, there is more stash for sale of my aptly named 'Stash for Sale' blog click *here* or on the Stash Sale button on the sidebar

AEF, Paris 2013

2013 is the 10th birthday/anniversary of the l'aiguille en fête. Our hotel must have known the 'Bond' girls were in town as our room was aptly numbered! Although we arrived in Paris on the day before the show, I thought you would rather see the AEF pictures first so I will post more pictures next time of how we spent our afternoon on the Wednesday!

We arrived at the new venue, Hall 6 at the Porte de Versailles and, as soon as we had disposed of our coats and luggage, we made our way immediately to Aisle C, number 5.4 where we knew we would find Monsieur Roulot and his delightful family and his wonderful display of hand-made scissors.

Although there were a pair or three of his amazing (and very expensive) scissors that really took my heart, I was extremely good and only purchased some of his less expensive versions. Does five pairs count as 'some'? I originally purchased four pairs but passing by later in the day, I espied another pair which just had to come back with me.

I was actually quite restrained this trip and none of these charms made their way into my bag although Kirby wasn't quite so restrained! At the end of the day she was 'Euro'd out' so it was good that I was able to buy her a chocolate bar at the Eurostar terminal at the Gare du Nord!

I was tempted by this tiny china pot with a some very pretty hand-made pins.

At the end of a very tiring day Kirby rested on the floor before our metro trip back to the Gare du Nord surrounded by our luggage and her purchases.

All of the above pictures are clickable for close up views.

My dear French friend and her family had once again invited us to join her family for a couple of days and I would like to thank her. As usual we exchanged gifts and more of this in my next post.

Thank you for visiting
Take care

AEF - Paris

Floor Plan of the l'aiguille en fête - click for a closeup view

No stitching to show or nothing I can show at present as I have been working on gifts so instead I thought I would post a picture of the floor plan of the AEF which needlework fair is in Paris from February 14-17. Kirby and I are all ready for our trip - our Eurostar tickets and hotel have been booked since October last year! We are leaving next Wednesday and will arrive in Paris at noon or 1pm French time. My dear French friend Valie will be at the Gare du Nord to meet us and we have planned a lovely afternoon/evening catching up. I have printed out the above floor plan and have marked those exhibits I really must not miss. The first visit will be at C5.4 - Cisellerie - which, of course, is M Roulot of Nogent's wonderful scissors where I am sure many of my Euros will find their way. My camera is charged so you can share our experience again this year so please come back for my next post.

It's bitterly cold here in the south east part of the UK but we have no snow, unlike those people is the north west part of the US so I have decided to forego our daily walk so I can work on Part 6 of the SAL JHA 1905 which was released in the early hours of yesterday morning. Part 7, which is a woven border, is also available for download on Simone's blog *here*. I am not sure whether or not I will stitch this part as I want the sampler to fit perfectly inside a 6" frame so I will decide once Part 6 is done. Thank you Simone for sharing this delightful sampler with us.

Take care

L'aiguille en fête 2012

Kirby, Caroline and I have returned from our brilliant trip to the AEF in Paris. We had a good trip on the Eurostar and met up with Valie as planned. I didn't take too many picture as I was much too busy shopping but I did take a few to share.

Above are my wonderful scissors made by the talented Monsieur Roulot. Aren't they just gorgeous? I also purchased more of his wonderful wares - see below.

And these are some of the offering on M Roulot's stall and picture of him and his lovely wife and daughter/daughter-in-law(?)

This was the Sajou stall where I managed to spend quite a few Euros ;-)

I could not resist buying 2 more pairs of Nogent scissors. The Eiffel Tower scissors are half gold and half silver - how fun are these? I actually purchased another two pairs of scissors but one is a gift and the other are some I picked up for Angela (who sent me Euros to shop for her) and are the same as the gold ones above but in silver.

I will leave you with further pictures of my scissors. All the above pictures are clickable for closeup views.

I did buy other goodies but I will save these for another day.

French Scissors and Lace Bobbins

Click on the picture for a closeup view

Valie gifted me with this very pretty glass frog for my French scissors (thank you Valie) but as there are spare holes I now need to buy more!

The bobbins, complete with the beautiful French lace, I purchased at the AEF although I am now thinking that I should have purchased more so next time I go I will make a list!

Red - again!

This is Marie-Louise Leidier 1905-1906 from Petits rouges d'ici et d'ailleurs by Muriel Brunet and Françoise Ritz, stitched on 38ct nacre Gander linen with AVAS 2925 and hem-stitched with DMC 644. This was one of the projects that I took with me on my recent trip to France in case I had time to stitch but only a few stitches were made there. French designers, French linen, French silk thread and started in France - rather apt I think!

Whilst in Paris I also visited the AVAS Warehouse where there were sumptuous silks on display - a stitcher's heaven!

And a new start. This is Anna Millet 1895 © Reflets de Soie which is a private SAL which I am doing with the lovely Yuko. This is my second start as for some reason I originally decided to start this in the middle of the sampler but I miscounted and when I tried to unpick it I discovered that the red thread had stained the linen so a fresh piece of fabric had to be overlocked (serged) and dyed with walnut ink. This piece actually looks more 'vintage' than the first piece - check out the small 'dirty marks'. The fabric is my favourite 48ct Gander linen with HDF OMG Red 1149 silk thread. I re-started it in the top left-hand corner which is my usual starting place. I am hoping that my red wall will soon be filled. I wonder how Yuko is getting on with her SAL?

Gifts given and received!

Before I went to Paris I stitched up some gifts. This biscornu was for Valie and you may have already seen this picture on her blog as I blatantly stole it from there - there is a second picture on her blog if you want a closer look! I actually made two of these biscornus, exactly the same except that one pair of buttons were slightly darker than the other. The second biscornu I gave to Angela, who does not have a blog but certainly should as her work in amazing! They were both stitched on 35ct white Brussel linen with white no 12 perle cotton and HDF Baneberry.

And here is another picture shamelessly stolen from Valie's blog and this time of the beautiful Valentine gift she stitched for me. Isn't it gorgeous? Thank you Valie!

I packed a little project in case I found time to stitch and although I managed to put a few stitches into it before my departure, not many stitches were made during my trip. I have since finished this little red sampler and it's has been mailed to it's new owner. It is stitched on 38ct nacre Gander linen with AVAS soie d'alger 2925. The magazine I have used for a 'backdrop' is issue 37 of Mains & Merveilles which is full of red samplers!

As it was Angela's birthday the day after Valentine's Day I thought she deserved a gift to celebrate such an occasion. I know that her favourite colour is pink so I made her one of pin pillows which she had admired when I had made these for others. This, too, is stitched on 35ct white Brussels linen with white no 12 perle cotton and an unknown pink silk thread. I really should have put some pins into it to finish it off - sorry Angela!

I have another gift to show you but I need to take a picture to show it off to it's full advantage but I will tell you that it's beautiful and I love it!

I am now stitching yet another little red sampler, Marie-Louise 1905-1906 which is near to completion and then I have plans for a SAL with Yuko of - yes you've guessed - another red sampler! My red wall will soon be full.

Almost forgot Peg of Lightening Fingers ... not! is having a wonderful giveaway - pop over and have a look *here*. You have until March 7 to enter.

Thanks for visiting - have a good weekend
Take care

I ♥ Paris!

This delightful little flea market find was given to me by my dear friend and wonderful hostess/guide in Paris - she knows who she is - thank you so much for making our trip so memorable! This tiny little red sampler, given in an antique AVAS box, is a true delight and I am sure there are many envious people looking at this. I absolutely love it and maybe I will chart it for iStitch Designs?

I have yet more gifts to whet your appetite so please visit with me again.

Of course, at the AEF I had to purchase some scissors from the master of scissor makers, Monsieur Roulot of Nogent. These were not actually the scissors that I had intended to buy but I did not realise that he would not take a bank card and I did not have enough cash on me to purchase the scissors of my dreams. Yes - they were that expensive! I realised, once I returned home and counted the remaining Euros, that I did indeed have enough cash but I was worried that I would leave myself short for the remainder of my trip! So this means I either have to contact Monsieur Roulot or take another trip next year.

And check out these antique bobbins - aren't they gorgeous? I had planned on using these to tidy up some ribbons but I cannot bear to remove the original threads or to untie the bow.

And more bobbins, one wound with delicate lace and one empty. I am sure I will find something to wind on this one.

And on my return from France I discovered that some of the Spring bulbs in my garden have started to flower. Tiny snowdrops, primroses and and crocuses to brighten up a dull garden and the daffodils are up but have yet to flower. I love Spring flowers!

Take care
