Fast service from Amazon.fr!

Amazing service from Amazon.fr - on Thursday I ordered the above book (see my previous post) and this morning it arrived! You would not believe how tiny the patterns are and I cannot wait to try one. I know that I cannot read any of the instructions but a pattern is a pattern in any language! Thank you Valie for showing this book on your blog - I would never have known it existed otherwise.

The postman also handed me a card to collect a package from the Post Office as there is Customs Duty of £16.19 to pay! How extortionate is that? I am expecting two packages - some fabric from Needle in a Haystack and a Valentine exchange.

Yesterday I finished another motif on Beatrix Potter SAL. I am not enjoying this as much as I enjoyed Hannah Beeby; the motifs seem exceptionally bigger than those on Miss Hannah - maybe because I am working on 36ct whereas Miss Hannah was on 40ct. However I like the fabric and the silk floss and will carry on.

Happy Valentine's day to all - I received a bouquet of yellow ? roses from Ken!

Missing in action?

Did you think I was Missing in Action? It certainly feels like it! I have been stitching but more about that later.

Today I received a wonderful RAK from Mary from Tennessee. Now I am not sure whether Mary has a blog but she certainly reads both my blog and my wish list as she contacted me to say that she had a duplicate of Quaker Virtues by Bygone Stitches and offered to send it to me! Today an envelope arrived from Mary with not only the QV chart but she also enclosed M Designs Sun Needle Roll. This was really kind of you Mary and please accept my sincere thanks.

Now my stitching ... I have stitched a personal exchange piece; I have stitched my blogaversary giveaway (there are still 7 days to go before this draw is made) and I have stitched my ornament for the 2009 Christmas Challenge but all three pieces need 'finishing' so I guess I need a marathon finishing session. Hopefully this will be soon but I am awaiting on a Charland mistletoe charm so once this arrives I will finish off these pieces and post some pictures. In the meantime, I have joined the Needlepoint Beatrix Potter Quaker Sampler SAL (well I had to have something to replace Hannah Beeby) but I do have a couple of more exchanges pieces to do first.

Christmas lights

I hope you have all had a great Christmas - I know I did. We spent Christmas Day at our daughter's and today we spent at our son's house. I have eaten far too much so it's now back to my healthy eating plan as I do not want to put back on the weight I lost! Before we came home this evening we drove around looking at the Christmas lights. The above display is alongside a river and is really pretty. Usually the house on the bottom right hand corner picture has a snow machine going but we must have missed it tonight. Yes, I know some of you have the real stuff but it's ages since it snowed here so we have to rely on a machine.

I have found time to stitch and yesterday I put the final stitch in Hannah Beeby although that's not quite true as I have now decided to hem stitch it, so you could say there are a few more stitches to go in! I also made a start on my section of Rowyn's QFRR and part-stitched on a private exchange. No pictures to show as I want to complete the hem-stitching on Hannah before I show her again although I will take a picture of Rowyn's sampler either tomorrow or Monday. I am planning a new start for the New Year but I am undecided as to start Beatrix Potter Quaker sampler or to start my re-stitch of Merry Cox's Diminutive Sewing set. Both are kitted up so it could be either although I am completely changing the alphabet on the MC project so I will see how this goes. And I really have to decide on something to stitch for my blogoversary draw too so don't forget to check back for the draw posting!

We have visitors coming tomorrow so I don't expect to get any stitching done tomorrow.

A new chart and Hannah Beeby

I saw the above chart on someone's wish list and fell in love with it. I managed to contact Elizabeth of Dames of the Needle (here) and she very kindly made sure I received this in time for stitching over the holiday.

In the meantime the return of Hannah Beeby ...

Since finishing my Christmas stitching I returned to Hannah. The last time you saw Hannah she looked like this (here) and now I only have one motif to go in the bottom right hand corner. I know it sounds strange but I actually don't want to finish as I will miss her but all good things must come to an end and I do have Beatrix Potter Quaker sampler all kitted up and ready to go!

My blogoversary is fast approaching ... I will be having a draw so please check back for the draw posting. I have no idea yet what the prize will be - so those of you who enter will have to trust me that I will produce something nice!

May I thank everyone who has visited my blog (especially those who have left such wonderful comments) in the past year and I wish each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From Valerie

This is the wonderful Quaker pinkeep I received from Valerie this morning for my birthday. Isn't it just gorgeous? It is stitched on 32ct Lakeside Linens Navy Bean with Belle Soie Blue Lagoon. So beautiful and ...

these are the other goodies that were also in the box! Milady's Needle Quakers Rule (complete with the acrylic ruler) from my Wish List, a cut of 40ct antique white Newcastle linen, 2 skeins of AVAS in 2 shade of blue (my favourite colour), a pack of book rings (I see some floss tags in the future), some notelets and some dark chocolate. Yummy!

A closeup view of the pinkeep ... the backing fabric and the braiding are just perfect and Valerie also stitched my initials too! I know Valerie is stretched for stitching time at the moment but she has taken the time to stitch and prepare such a wonderful gift for my birthday. I also know that she always thinks that her work is not 'good enough' but believe me the stitching and finishing on this pinkeep are perfect and I am pleased to show it off in my home! Thank you Valerie for such a thoughtful and wonderful gift.

Over the weekend Hannah Beeby made an appearance and I have stitched a further three motifs. I will post an updated picture tomorrow. I also started on a personal exchange piece but no photos of this until the new year!

Oh nearly forgot - I got some cosy black Ugg boots at Bluewater and a black top but I couldn't find a leather jacket that I liked so Ken gave me the money to either buy a jacket when I find one or to spend on stash! We had a great meal out too.

An early birthday

Last night should have been our Stitch-n-Bitch usual meeting but instead we went out for dinner to celebrate, not only the upcoming holiday, but also my pending birthday! I am ashamed to say that although I took my camera with me, it stayed in the depths of my bag and never saw the light of day (or should I say 'night'?). We went to a Thai restaurant in Sandwich and after a delicious meal - I had chicken and cashew nuts with noodles followed by coconut ice-cream served in a real coconut shell - we went back to Caroline's house for coffee and gifts. There I was met with a large box and some smaller packages and a helium 'Happy Birthday' balloon. The box, which was from all of my fellow Stitch-n-Bitchers, contained Abigail Colby's Workbasket by Primitive Traditions which, as those of you have read my Wish List will already know, has been on the said List for ages! I received not only the chart but the basket too so I am in dilemma as I want to start it - Now! But ... I need to finish Hannah Beeby and I also have some upcoming exchanges that I need to work on first. The smaller packages contained a beautiful glass drop with a tiny fairy on a dragonfly from Sue, a lovely quilted bag from June, a Moulton Brown candle (which smells heavenly) from Sylvie, lots of skeins of Vicky Clayton silk threads from Caroline and lastly, a teeny (it's only about 1" long) beaded pea-pod scissor fob from Lynn, who unfortunately could not make the dinner as the date coincided with her work Christmas do. Thank you all for these gorgeous gifts, I am blessed to have such wonderful friends.

We also exchanged Christmas gifts but we always save these to open on Christmas Day so more about these at a later date but, suffice it to say, that stitchy friends buy stitchy gifts and we all like stitchy gifts don't we?

Tomorrow (my actual birthday) Ken has the day off so he is taking me to Bluewater (which probably means I get to choose my own present - yippee!) I have seen some beautiful black Ugg boots and a leather jacket and ... shall I go on?

Something old, something new ...

This morning I had to go into town and I remembered to take my camera with me. I stopped by Deal Castle to take a few photos. I wrote about this castle earlier this year (here); it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful it is. The bottom right hand picture shows the moat (obviously there is no water) and the tiny windows are, if I remember correctly, the windows to the cells in the dungeons! I have not been inside this castle since I was a child so maybe I should make another visit and get some inside shots?

The main picture shows the Timeball Tower  which is quite amazing. Every hour on the hour the ball rises to the top and then drops slowly back into place. When I was working I could see this from my office window but I didn't see it happen every hour but then again I was probably too busy! The top two smaller pictures show Deal Pier which has just been renovated at the end and there is now a restaurant out there. Again I need to go take a visit so I can tell you more about this. The last photo shows a view over the English Channel and it is from this angle that we can, on a clear day, see the coast of France. Unfortunately it wasn't clear enough to see today but I promise to go back and take another photo when it is visible.

And now to a stash buy which arrived this morning. This really pretty pattern is M Designs Merry Christmas Needle Roll. I am not sure if I will get this stitched up for this coming Holiday but I will try and, if not,  it is definitely on my 'to do list' for next year.

And today's sneak preview  ... some hem-stitching! I enjoy hem-stitching and I intend to hem-stitch Hannah Beeby once she is finished. Hannah is sadly awaiting my return from all my Holiday stitching but once this is done, she is definitely at the top of the pile!

One down ...

I spent yesterday afternoon finishing - one is a gift which I cannot show but here is Meg's ornament. The pattern is Mary Garry's Christmas Heart from the 2000 JCS magazine and is stitched on 35ct white Brussels linen with DMC threads and the back is a red and green fabric. I'm sorry that the picture isn't very good - it was hard to get a good shot even though I went out into the garden. I also made some thread drops to go with my exchange and gift packages.

This afternoon I will either finish off a tiny Christmas needleroll that I hem-stitched last night or make a start on a new ornament/gift. I would really like to put a few stitches in Hannah Beeby but, as Christmas is hurtling towards us at an amazing speed, I really must get my ornaments/gifts done.

The charms that I ordered for Drawn Thread's Random Thoughts arrived this morning - thanks Andrea for the name of the UK stockist. So, I now have the chart (2 of these - does anyone want to trade for the new one?) and the charms and have just heard that the NPI silks have been mailed. I may just get to start this before Christmas!

The weather has turned extremely cold these past couple of days and it looks as though Tommy the tortoise is ready for hibernation. He has tucked himself into the root of the ivy and is very lethargic. He is early this year as it's usually the second weekend in October. I miss him during the winter months and I worry about him as the tortoise that we adopted one summer didn't wake up after hibernation but the vet said that she was at least 150 years old and had died of old age.

Thanks for visting - have a good weekend

Dragonflies

Most of my exchange and gift stitching is done and I now need a marathon finishing session! I have also been making some scissor fobs with Swaroski crystal beads for my exchange packages. The dragonfly fobs turned out so pretty that I decided to make co-ordinating thread drops too. One of these dragonflies has already flown away to its new owner - I wonder who that can be?

My HOE Halloween exchange is completely finished and I now need to make up a goodies package ready to mail out to my partner next weekend.

No more stitches into Hannah Beeby since my last update but I hope to get back to her very soon. I must also make a start on some Christmas ornaments for the children and for friends plus one for the HOE ornament exchange.

I am very tempted by Vonna's Me, Myself and I Neighbourhood RR as I have been watching Carol's construction for a while now and also by the Beatrix Potter SAL but as I ended up stitching Hannah by myself I am not sure I will bother with another SAL. Both of these start on January 1 2009 so if you are interested go take a look at their respective blogs.

Now there's a strange golden orb in the sky today and I need a 'fix' so I am going out in the garden with my book so ...

... have a great weekend and thanks for visiting

Working, stitching and Kirby

At last, my stint of working is over for a short while! It's strange how you get out of the habit of working. I have today, all next week and the following Monday off and then it's back to the grindstone for 10 days. I think this will probably be the last time this year as everyone seems to have taken their annual leave so for me it will be back to being a 'home bird'. Now what shall I buy with my earnings? I am sure I will think of something - any suggestions?

Although I have been stitching a little I cannot show any pictures because it's either exchanges or gifts. I have also been making some more thread drops to go with the exchanges/gifts so I cannot show you them either. Hannah has taken a backseat so I cannot show an update of her but I can show you Kirby. She is enjoying the start of her Fashion and Design course and has made a few new friends too. Today they have gone on a trip to a London Museum armed with sketch pads and pencils. I hope she gets to go to the Victoria and Albert Museum as their Textiles Department is wonderful.

The above photos were taken in London a couple of weeks ago - the second one is at the London Transport Museum where, of course, she got to drive a London bus! Well, not really but she did get to sit in the driver's seat and get her picture taken!

I have signed up for HOE Christmas ornament exchange so as soon as I know who my partner is I will look for a pattern to stitch. This afternoon I am going to finish off stitching a birthday gift as I really need to get this stitched, finished and into the mail so that it arrives in time for her birthday. Why do these birthdays creep up so quickly? I also want to watch a dvd called Mr Brooks with Kevin Costner. Well not actually 'with' Kevin Costner I meant it stars Kevin Costner but I wouldn't mind watching it with him so if you care to call round later Kevin ... feel free!

Have a great weekend

A cat with four ears?

Firstly an update on Hannah - I am actually going to be sorry when she's finished! I love stitching with one strand on 40ct linen as the effect is so delicate. I did have a few problems on Friday evening as my eyes were a bit sore - probably from too much time on the computer at work and at home! I still have to finish off the motif with the B inside but I jumped over to work on the motif alongside as it was easier to focus on.

A few bits of stash arrived in the mail including the Fall issue of Sampler & Antique Needlework Quarterly. Inside there is a lovely Dutch sampler pattern which I really must stitch and I have already enquired about the fabric from The Sampler Guild! The fabric I ordered for Beatrix Potter Quaker sampler - 36ct Edinburgh linen in 'Days Gone By' - arrived from Silkweaver so this will probably be my next Quaker stitch once Hannah is finished. My order of silk ribbons also arrived, as did the pattern from Giulia Punti Antichi - Old Italian Sewing Set which pattern I have been after for ages. I am expecting a few more goodies to arrive soon :o) so watch this space!

Kirby starts her Fashion and Design course today at the University College of Art at Canterbury. She has been working really hard on her pre-course project and above is part of a piece she did on animals in historical art. She designed and stitched her own spot sampler and she allowed me to photograph the page from her portfolio to show you. I think I may have already told you that Kirby has been stitching since she was four years old and produces some wonderful pieces of needlework. Click on the picture for a closeup to see how neatly she stitches.

Lastly I thought you would like to see this photo of 'Yoda', a cat with 4 ears, who featured in the UK press this past week! If you want to read the article go here I am in love with this cat - he is so cute and how amazing for him to have two sets of ears.

I am working this week but only for three days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so hopefully I will be able to fit in some stitching time too.

Jayne's Attic stitching challenge

Today is reveal day for Jayne's Attic Stitching Challenge for August which is a freebie from AMAP (chart here). I originally decided to stitch it in one colour but halfway through I decided that the corner would look nice in colour. I also wanted to 'finish' it as a tiny flatfold needlebook but as I was working last week I knew I wouldn't have time to do this so I fell back on a pinkeep and I am pleased with the result. It is stitched on 40ct ivory linen with the alphabet and borders in Vicki Clayton's Raisin Wine and the corner piece in AVAS silk flosses. The tiny pins are Clover Applique pins and the backing fabric is just a plain co-ordinating colour.

I have also been working on Hannah Beeby for a short while each evening and I will take a photo shortly. She's looking good!

I thought yesterday was my last day at work but the lady that had surgery is not recovering as quickly as she had hoped so they have asked me to come in for three days next week starting on Tuesday which does mean that I get a three day weekend. Another good thing about working is that I was able to take some mat board in and use the guillotine to cut pieces for my HOE Halloween exchange and a Christmas ornament both of which are ready for finishing now.

Thank you to all my visitors who leave such lovely comments and to those who lurk - don't be shy leave a comment so I can make a return visit to you!

Have a good weekend
Take care

S.A.D.

I can't believe that it's been six days since my last post! It was a holiday weekend here in the UK and I don't know where the time went to. Kirby called round on Saturday to work on her pre-course project and on Sunday we went to Justin's home for the day. Yesterday I just didn't feel too great - not ill - I just felt worn out and extremely tired. It's probably the start of my S.A.D. and it's hit me early this year. No sunshine and I get the blues! I really hate the end of the Summer months and I have no Florida trip to look forward to this year which usually sets me up for the Winter.

I am back at work this week covering for someone having surgery so I won't be able to get much stitching/blogging done but I have been working steadily on Hannah. I couldn't seem to get a good picture today but I will try again tomorrow... And I have just heard that Stitch-n-Bitch has been cancelled for tomorrow :o(

I heard from Edgar that my re-start on QFRR has arrived safely in San Francisco. I made him some personal thread drops and I think he was pleased with them - just look at those little black sheep!

Hannah Beeby 1816

Just a quick update on Hannah Beeby. I decided to work down the left hand side and then across the page. I am so enjoying stitching on Hannah even though it's on 40ct linen. I wish I had used my Millenium frame and floor stand though as using Q-Snaps, which I remove when I am not stitching, it does have a 'pulled through a hedge backwards' look to it. I hope I will be able to remove all the creases once it's finished as I will be loathe to press with a damp cloth after the fiasco with the freebie chart piece where the colours ran. I must check out to see if Needlepoint Inc silk is colourfast.

I have also nearly finished my re-start on the QFRR. I only have the rabbit to stitch and I have to decide whether to stitch him in a different colour and, if so, what colour to use. I am mindful to stitch him in grey and then frog the initials and date and use the same grey there but I need to search my stash for the right grey. I really should have thought about this before I started! The green/black silk I'm using is a Vicki Clayton premium silk - Imperialosity.

Now it's time for those household chores - do they never end? Perhaps I should have done them before I sat down at the computer!

Stitching with hair
Foundling Hospital, London. Early 19th Century

Annie Parker. Circa 1880

Back in 1997 I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit of British and Historic Embroideries 1590-1880 held at Whitney Antiques in Whitney Oxon. Amongst the samplers on display were two that stood out for me and these were the two that were stitched with hair!

The first picture above was worked in hair on fine cotton and finished as a small pillow - 9" x 8 1/2".

The London Foundling Hospital was established in 1742 by Captain Thomas Coram, a master mariner and philanthropist. He found himself shocked at the sight of so many children and infants abandoned by their parents in the streets of London that after persuading some ladies of nobility to assist him he set up the Foundling Hospital.

Admittance worked on a first come first served basis but as the number of infants increased a ballot system was set up. A mother intending to leave her infant at the Hospital has to draw a coloured  ball from a bag to decide it's fate. Black - mother and child were turned away. Red - the child went on a waiting list. White - the child was accepted. Only the first born of an unmarried mother could be admitted and this child has to be under twelve months old and deserted by it's father. The mother had to have been of 'good repute' before 'her fall'.

Accepted infants were sent to foster parents until the age of 4 or 5 after which they were returned to the Hospital where they were educated. At the age of 14 boys were apprenticed or joined the army whilst the girls were trained for domestic service.

The second picture shows a sampler again worked in hair and stitched by Annie Parker. There are two other examples of her work; a pincushion in the Black Museum of Scotland Yard and a sampler in the collection of H M Prison Service in Newbold Revel near Rugby.

Annie Parker was well educated but could not refuse an intoxicating drink and was before the magistrates charged with drunkenness over 400 times and therefore spent a great deal of time in prison. She died in 1885 of consumption. She had a luxuriant head of hair and whilst in prison worked a number of samplers as gifts. The pictured sampler was presented by Annie to Dr Dixon on the morning of her death.

Full credit for the photos and information to Whitney Antiques.

After seeing these samplers and having fairly long hair myself I just had to have a go so, after washing and drying my hair, I pulled some out and stitched a tiny alphabet. It was not easy to work with my hair as it's quite thick and springy. I have searched to see if I can find this small piece of work but we have moved house since then and I cannot locate it at present but I will keep up with the search and hopefully will be able to show you my effort of stitching with hair!

Thank you for all your kind words for my ailing back. It's a lot better today although I still get the occasional twinge.

On the stitching front, I have been working on Ms Hannah and I will show an update shortly. I have also been crafting some more personalized thread drops.

Take care

Hannah Beeby 1816

Just a quick update on Miss Hannah. As you can see I am working on the cornucopia motif and I have stitched "Jane" above it -  I wondered why the N is worked back-to-front? And, who indeed, was Jane? There is some history of this sampler quoted on the pattern which reads:

"Hannah Beeby attended Wigton Friend's School between 2.1816 and 2.1817 and her sister Mary attended between 2.1816 and 2.1818. The family lived at Allonby; a small village on the Solway coast about 12 miles from Wigton, Cumbria in England.

At the time the Beeby sisters were at the school it had only been open for one year. The school was housed in a  building at Highmoor, in the south end of Wigton with an enrolment of 15 boys and 15 girls. A new purpose built school was erected west of Wigton at Brookefield in 1826 and continued to have students till 1982 when it closed due to insufficient enrolment.

The original sampler is in the possession of a direct descendent of Hannah's sister Sarah. In 1831, Sarah, her Irish husband and three children immigrated to Canada and settled in the East End of Toronto - now known as Scarborough. The sampler given as a gift to her sister, travelled with the family and had never been framed until 2002 and is in excellent condition.

It was originally stitched on 25ct linen and using three colours of thread, the design is easily recognised as "Quaker". Although no textbook with charted designs has been found it is thought that school teachers and their students had a written source that would be used for their needlework designs. The words "4 mos" may refer to April, because the Quakers never used the names of the months or the days, only describing them by number."

And here ends today's history lesson!

Two finishes and some stitching

I have had a couple of finishes this week. The first is for Jayne's Attic Redwork Exchange so I am unable to show a picture as yet but I can say I am going to find it extremely hard to part with! I have also partly stitched the Monthly Stitching Challenge for JA and I am trying to decide whether to carry on and complete the whole piece with the one colour or stitch the corner piece in different colours so it stands out. Watch this space - reveal day is August 30.

The second finish is a scissor fob for the Monthly Finishing Challenge for August. This is a really tiny fob as I stitched one over one on the same raw linen that I used for the scissor pocket and it was not very easy to finish but I got there. I'm sorry about the poor photos but the light is really bad here today - I think the summer may have passed if the past few days are anything to go by!

Still no news on the Quaker Friendship Round Robin. It appears that there are 3 pieces missing and we are assuming they are with the one person who has moved house. Maybe they are travelling the globe and will eventually make their way back to the sender. We can but hope.

I have also stitched my piece for HOE Halloween exchange. We don't celebrate Halloween here in the UK (or at least we don't) so this is not something I would have normally chosen to stitch but I enjoyed it and it's kind of cute. I have no idea how I am going to finish it yet but I am sure I will come up with something.

And now it's back to Hannah Beeby.

Mail and a birthday lunch

The mailman delivered to me this lovely package from Joan who was my partner (unbeknown to me of course) for the HOE Summer Quaker exchange. Joan stitched for me this wonderful pinkeep with Dinkey Dyes Mango Tango silk floss. Now regular readers will know how much I adore anything Quaker so you can imagine how pleased I am to receive this. It's beautifully stitched and finished and just look at that pretty fabric that Joan chose for the back. Not only did she make this gorgeous pinkeep she also made a pretty project bag and a cute chicken pincushion. Also in the package was a piece of 40ct cream linen, a packet of needles, a matching magnetic notepad and notecards and Milady's Needle Quaker Christmas Smalls chart - Joan obviously read my Wish List. Thank you so much Joan - this is a memorable exchange.

Yesterday was Ken's birthday so we had a family lunch out at a local pub. My son-in-law Ian arrived with my daughter Nicola and my grandson Jack in his US Army truck. This is the original truck from the movie Evita and Ian has restored it to it's former glory. My son's children were highly delighted to be allowed to sit up front to have their photo taken although Jack looks pretty bored by the whole thing. I'll let you guess which one is Jack!

So a pretty busy weekend but no stitching.

A few questions answered:

Donna: The glue I used for the pins is Loctite Superglue, Easy Brush which looks rather like a bottle of nail varnish so the brush gives some control over the glue. I think you can also get a superglue in gel form which should give the same control.

AnneMarie: The thread I am using for Hannah Beeby is Needlepoint Inc Silk shade number 407 which is a very dark green. The fabric is 40ct linen.

Patti: Of course you can add me to your sidebar - I am honoured that you wish to do so.
